Endings Are Different from Outcomes

Working with Endings in Relationship-Based Practice

Introduction

I will begin with an example of the consequences of a common mis-handling of an ending:

I was meeting with Audrey, a foster carer whose foster daughter Jane had, the previous day, shared with her further disturbing memories of the abuse that had led to her being in care. Audrey was agitated and upset. I encouraged her to phone Jane’s social worker and talk it through with her and organise what to do next. She phoned, and the social worker answered; ‘I’m not Jane’s social worker anymore’, she said. ‘You will have to speak to her new social worker’ and gave the name. ‘She’s not here now, but will be back this afternoon.’

‘Oh’, Audrey replied, sounding calm, ‘Thank you. I’ll call later.’ She put the phone down slowly, turned to me and yelled, ‘AND WHEN EXACTLY WAS SHE PLANNING TO TELL ME AND JANE THAT!?’ and burst into tears.

The following week, I learned that Jane had refused to meet the new social worker, cursing at her and locking herself in her room. Audrey, meanwhile, described angrily a late-night call by the new social worker to come to yet another meeting, adding, ‘And who do they think they are to demand I do this when I already had another appointment at that time; and I have to bring my younger children to school?’, adding this to a mental list of other unreasonable demands and building what felt to me like a growing body of evidence to demonstrate that the whole social services department was useless.
